How To Reduce Dust In Your Home

Let’s face it no one wants dust build up in their home, this easy home fix will help you learn how to easily reduce dust build up in your home. Yes, you can vacuum your home and dust off your furniture, shelves and so on every single day, yet the dust build up will still be back there with-in 24 hours or so. This dust is actually coming from your home heating vents, taking consideration that your windows are close so dust is not always entering from the outside.

Some people think by getting their heating ducts cleaned will stop the dust, well it will a little, but does not stop it completely as it is coming from the outside into your ducting, then gets blown throughout your home. Really there is nothing you can do to prevent this if just left as is. Now for those of you that want to reduce the amount of dust coming out from your heating ducts, there are special filters made to fit most regular style floor air vents and they can be easily trimmed for an exact fit. I have been using these special filter for the last 5 years and can honestly say they do work great, our home is far less dusty then it used to be as seen on our furniture (dust build up). There is no maintenance for these filters, you simply replace them every year or two and your good to go once again and the best part is they are not very expensive. If interested in these special dust reducing filters for your home to keep the dust levels from building up throughout, you can find them at places such as Home Depot, Lowe’s home hardware, Canadian Tire, other home hardware stores, or can be bought from Amazon online, so they are easily found and very cheap and would be very beneficial for any house hold. Paint Brushes or Paint Rollers which to use?

You may wonder whether you’ll need to use a paint brush or paint roller, to do the job correctly! The answer is you will most likely need both. The paint brush will handle narrow spaces or cut in’s. You would use a brush for detailed work and for trim. The paint roller can apply paint at least three times faster than even the widest brush, so you will need it for speed. The beveled ends of a roller cannot lay down a sharp line of paint, but this prevents roller and overlap marks as well. Use a roller for large flat area’s such as walls, floors and ceilings. So you see you need both the basic brush and roller.

There are two types of bristle brushes:

  1. Natural Brushes: Usually hog bristles used for solvent-base finishes.
  2. Synthetic Brushes: Which are nylon or polyester for water-base finishes.

Using the correct type of brush is very important because natural bristles can swell in water-base paint resulting in poor application. With proper care and cleaning your paint brushes will last for years. There are also foam paint brushes that work well when applying smooth finishes to small area’s and they are very low cost.

Paint Rollers: The basic paint roller is a handle with a wire cage and threaded base, a roller with a nap fits over the cage. Always invest in the best roller you can afford and it will last for years. When buying a paint roller look for:

  • A heavy frame with minimum flex under pressure.
  • Nylon bearing that spin easily.
  • A comfortable grip.
  • A cage with at least five wires and an anti-slip device to keep the roller in place.

Roller Covers: Buy a quality roller cover (the part that applies the paint) with the correct nap thickness. Most jobs require a roller with either a 3/8 or 1/2 inch nap. Note, bargain roller covers with paper cores break down quickly and cannot be reused. Resin cores last longer and can be reused. When buying a roller cover look for:

  • A durable resin core.
  • Beveled ends to avoid leaving beads of paint along the edges.
  • Seams that you cannot feel through the nap.
  • Heavy, uniform nap that sheds little lint.

The Right Way To Paint Walls

Preparation takes longer than the actual painting time, but it must be done and done correctly if you want the right way to paint walls. Taking the time to properly prepare the surface will make all the difference in the final results.

Paint covers discolorations, but does not cover surface flaws. Paint covers the small bumps, nicks, dents and cracks, but it will not make the blemishes go away, you must do that. Always buy the best paint, rollers, and brushes. Cheap paint will turn powdery after a couple of years. Cheap paint rollers and paint brushes, mar the surface by leaving fuzz and bristles behind.

Protect all surfaces you are not going to paint. Protect your floors, trim, woodwork, and furnishings. Failing to do so could be a major problem.

Clean the surface you are painting. Wipe down the walls or trim with trisodium phosphate or a phosphate free wall cleaner substitute. Then rinse the wall a sponge and clean water until the water runs clean, let the surface dry. Now you look for every repair or imperfection you can find to fix.

Caulk the cracks. Fill all exterior cracks with paintable caulk, between walls and moldings, run caulk down the corners if they are cracked, then smooth the caulk with a wet finger. This will give you a smooth transition between surfaces.

Glazier’s Putty. Glazer’s compound is a putty that sticks instantly and is used for filling exterior nail holes and dries very quickly.

Time to prime the surface. Applying a primer sealer keeps any underlying stains from eventually bleeding through. Primer forms a molecular bond between the paint and the wall.

Sanding between coats of paint. Sand the wall or really just quickly wipe the wall between each coat of paint with 120 grit sandpaper, then brush off the dust with a towel or old paint brush. A sanded wall when finished feels velvet smooth to the touch, an un-sanded wall feels slightly bumpy.

The actual painting of the walls is the easy part, just make sure you always end in an up and down motion if you can. You now know the correct way how to paint walls. All products can be found at places such as Home Depot, Home Hardware, Lowe’s etc.
